Travel and accommodation

Visa
Since your stay in Maastricht, the Netherlands, is less than one month, you can travel on a tourist visa. For residents of non-EU countries or non-residents of North America, please let us know if you need a letter to the Dutch Embassy in your country, to help to expedite matters. Should you run into any problems in this regard, please let us know.

Insurance
It is also very important to note that you will be required to have health insurance when you apply for a tourist visa. This is a rule of the Dutch Government. All persons entering the country must have full health coverage and liability.

Accommodation
There are many nice hotels in different price-ranges available in Maastricht.

The Apart Hotel and the NH hotel are very close to the campus, so you can easily walk to the SHE academy. The Apart Hotel has a special deal for SHE Academy participants. They can offer you a double room for single use, including breakfast and tourist tax for the price of €70,- per night. Guests can book directly at the Aparthotel and mention that they participate in the SHE Academy.

The Townhouse design hotel is in the city centre, at walking distance from the central station and not very expensive. The cheapest option is probably the Stayokay Youth Hostel. It has private rooms as well as dorms, but this hostel is located at more than 30 minutes walking distances from the campus. For more information and more options, see the website of the tourist office.

.. coming by train
From Schiphol Airport there is an excellent train service to Maastricht via Utrecht (travel time approx. 3 hours). Maastricht has two railway stations: Maastricht Central Station, which is located in the city Centre, and Maastricht-Randwijck station, which is a three minutes’ walk away from the conference venue. All trains from the south stop at station Randwijck.
Coming from the east and from the north, one has to change trains at Maastricht Central Station in order to reach Maastricht Randwijck station.

.. coming by bus
From the city centre you can take any bus going to the Academic Hospital Maastricht (azM / MUMC+) from the bus and railway station, the market square (Markt) and the Vrijthof Square (Vrijthof).

Paying public transportation: The OV-chip card
The OV-chip card is the means of payment for the public transport system. The OV-chipkaart can be loaded with credit in Euros with which you can travel anywhere within The Netherlands. We advise participants of SHE Academy to buy an anonymous OV-chipkaart, which costs approximately € 7,50 and which should then be loaded with credit in order to be able to travel. The anonymous OV-chipkaart can be bought at the ticket office and vending machines at the station. This card allows the holder to travel immediately and expires after 4 to 5 years.
Important! Don’t forget to check in and out each time you board the bus, tram, metro or train. Please view http://www.ov-chipkaart.nl/?taal=en or contact the OV-chip card customer service at 0031-0900-0980 for more information about the chip card.
